Seniors at The Hamptons of Tyler<\/a> are using their skills in stitching, sewing, and crocheting for the greater good. The Dorotha Tucker Hat Making Club, a resident-led group within the senior living community, has been crafting handmade hats for babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System.<\/p>

What started as a creative pastime has grown into a project that touches lives beyond the walls of the senior living community. Their generous gesture was spotlighted by CBS19<\/a> in March.<\/p>

For Rob Jones, Executive Director, the project hits close to home. His wife, a nurse in the NICU, has shared stories of the challenges families face and the difference an act of kindness can make.<\/p>

\u201cMy wife sees firsthand how much meaning these hats have to families in the NICU,\u201d Jones said. \u201cWhen our residents come together to make them, they\u2019re sending a message of support to parents during a difficult time. It\u2019s a reminder that our community cares, and that\u2019s powerful.\u201d<\/p>

The Dorotha Tucker Hat Making Club began meeting regularly again in 2025. Founded by the late Dorotha Tucker, a former resident, her friends now meet to continue her mission to create hats for those in need. They also use the time together to socialize with each other, sharing stories and tips as they work.<\/p>

\u201cOur residents have always had a heart for giving back, and this project is a beautiful example of that,\u201d Jones added. \u201cEach stitch represents not just warmth, but love, hope, and encouragement for families going through a challenging time.\u201d<\/p>
