Harlingen Senior Residents Celebrate Feathered Friends

Table of Contents

Residents at Valley View Senior Living love their feathered friends, who also live at the community: San Martin, Maximus, and Tiana, Yellow and Red Crown Amazon parrots. The birds occasionally visit assisted living and memory care residents during snacktime, creating a chance for interaction and fun.

Michael Zaker — also a resident of Valley View and in independent living — has made it a monthly tradition to share his love of parrots with others in the community. With decades of experience in raising, breeding, and training these birds, Michael’s visits bring activity and interaction to his fellow residents and the community team members.

Michael’s efforts build meaningful connections and provide an enriching experience for all involved.

“Michael’s visits create meaningful moments for him and all of our other residents,” said Liza Magallan, Executive Director of Valley View Senior Living. “It’s an activity that people really anticipate, and we’re grateful for the sense of connection it brings to everyone involved.”

The parrots bring their own personalities and experiences. San Martin, a 16-year-old Yellow Head Amazon, is the most experienced of the group and often accompanies Tiana, a 3-year-old Red Crown Amazon. Maximus, at just 1½ years old, is the newest addition to Michael’s flock. Together, the birds offer a fun and engaging experience for everyone who meets them.
