Harlingen WWII Veteran Celebrates 100 Years with Surprise Party and Parade

Valley View | WWII Veteran Celebrates 100th Birthday at Valley View in Harlingen
Valley View Senior Living in Harlingen, Texas, honors a WWII veteran with a memorable 100th birthday celebration filled with joy and community spirit.

For World War II veteran John R., the last ten decades can be summed up as “a really good life.” That’s what the Valley View Senior Living resident told journalist Steve Clark at myRGV, as the two sat down to reflect on the senior’s centenarian birthday.

For most, it’s hard to comprehend just how long 100 years is. John has lived through black-and-white TV, the moon landing, and the internet.

Before retiring to Harlingen, Texas, John moved to Wisconsin after the war to begin an apprenticeship in lithography. The lifelong career would lead him to meet his wife, Doris, who would become the mother of their three sons.

An independent living resident of Valley View, John was not prepared for the fanfare his senior living community had been planning.

Family members, staff, and fellow residents surprised him with an indoor parade. With all the attention on him, the occasion was made even more special by Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda’s attendance. She came bearing a proclamation declaring July 30, 2025, as John R. Day — along with a commemorative centennial coin.

“One hundred years is more than a milestone,” she announced, as myRGV reported. “It is a legacy. It is a century of service, love, and sacrifice, and quiet wisdom lived through eras of profound change.”

“It was magnificent and a total surprise,” John told KRGV News. “The good Lord gave me a long life, and I wish some of my buddies could have had it.”

John also received meaningful gifts from local veteran organizations. Telemundo McAllen was among several other journalists in attendance to cover the celebration.

“Recognizing John’s 100th birthday was an incredible honor for all of us,” said Rocky Ramirez, Executive Director of Valley View Senior Living. “To witness the joy on his face as we paid tribute to a century of life, service, and resilience reminded us why we do what we do — to lift up stories that deserve to be celebrated.”
