99-Year-Old Roanoke, TX Resident Reflects on 50 Years of Volunteer Service

If you ask Eileen H. what keeps her going at 99-years-old, she’ll tell you: staying curious, staying kind … and staying involved.

A longtime resident of Potsdam, New York, Eileen devoted five decades of her life to volunteering at RRH Canton-Potsdam Hospital. She began in the 1960s and never looked back, serving in a variety of roles, including running the hospital’s gift shop. For Eileen, the gift shop wasn’t just a retail corner. It was a place where comfort and connection quietly happened.

Reflecting on 50 Years of Volunteering | Harvest of Roanoke
Eileen shines at Harvest of Roanoke in Roanoke, TX, showing how volunteer service can bring lasting purpose and joy at every stage of life.

“I loved doing something that could bring joy to patients and families,” she shared. “It felt like we were all in it together, especially among the volunteers. We had fun while doing something that mattered.”

Eileen officially retired from volunteering in 2015 at the age of 89. But true to her spirit, her definition of retirement doesn’t mean sitting still. Since moving to Harvest of Roanoke in Roanoke, TX, in January 2024, Eileen continues to be a bright presence — always the first to show up to community activities and cheer on others, including a recent visit from the Byron Nelson High School cheerleaders.

When the squad dropped by for a patriotic craft event, Eileen lit up. “They were all so enthusiastic. It gave me hope seeing young women taking time to connect and give back,” she said, proudly posing with them for a group photo.

Her message to younger generations about getting involved? “Find a need you’re passionate about, and give your all to serve. If you can do that, you’ll never regret the time you gave.”

Now nearing her 100th birthday this December, Eileen is still finding ways to encourage those around her. Her life is a testament to the quiet power of showing up: for people, for your community, and for the small moments that often mean the most.

“Eileen reminds us all that staying connected and involved isn’t just good for the soul. It’s essential for a meaningful life,” said Linh Quach, Executive Director. “At Harvest of Roanoke, we believe every resident has something valuable to give, and we’re proud to provide opportunities where purpose and community thrive at every age.”
