At Midtowne Assisted Living and Memory Care, participation now comes with perks. Residents gathered for the grand opening of the Golden Rewards Shop — where everyday activities turn into points that can be exchanged for useful items and tasty treats.

Midtowne Assisted Living and Memory Care | Activities Turned Into Rewards
At Midtowne, the Golden Rewards Shop turns everyday activities into exciting rewards for residents.

The senior living community held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in March 2025, and residents eagerly explored shelves stocked with essentials like toiletries, snacks, and sodas — all made possible through donations.

The idea for the shop grew from a desire to boost activity attendance and create a sense of normalcy. Joewalla Vasil, Activity Director, came up with the concept and executed it with the support of the Midlothian community, which is also her hometown.

Joewalla reached out to local businesses and organizations to gather donations to stock the shop. Residents now earn points by joining various events: playing bingo, attending live music performances, crafting, or participating in chair exercises and devotionals. Points accumulate, giving residents the freedom to choose items they want or need, much like they would in a local store.

The senior living community even received love from local journalists for their efforts, with a write-up in the Midlothian Mirror.

“We wanted to spark more interest in activities and bring a bit of that classic shopping experience back,” said Charity Farr-McMullen, Executive Director. “It’s been great to see residents getting involved, not just for the points, but for the fun and connection that come with it.”

Bingo has quickly become a crowd favorite, with residents earning 3 points just for playing and 5 points for a win. Events like Happy Hour, arts and crafts, and live entertainment also draw participants eager to collect points for Shop Day. With a full calendar of activities, there are plenty of chances to rack up points.

The shop is open every other Wednesday, and the shelves stay stocked thanks to generous donations from the local community. Midtowne staff expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support, which has helped turn the vision of the Golden Rewards Shop into reality.
