Fritz, leader of the Green Thumbs club at The Grand Senior Living in Louisville, maintains the community’s vibrant flower gardens year-round.

Fritz leads the three-person Green Thumbs club with Jack and Marie. For over five years, they have cared for the community’s gardens. This summer, their work turned simple flower beds into a bright mix of elephant ears, petunias, zinnias, hibiscus, and calibrachoa. The colorful blooms drew many residents and visitors to stop and admire them.

Fritz followed a strict watering schedule, ensuring each plant received consistent care. He also practiced deadheading, carefully removing spent blooms to promote new growth and keep the garden looking fresh. His personal favorite? The iris.

Dedication in Bloom

“Fritz doesn’t check the weather before he waters. He just goes out there,” said Sherry Coder, Independent Living Activities Director at The Grand Senior Living. “Snow, heat, or rain, he’s watering those flowers at the same time because that’s what keeps them healthy. That kind of dedication to a garden isn’t something you see often. Our residents walk by those flowers every day, and they’re gorgeous because Fritz and his team treat them like they matter.”

The Green Thumbs club has been part of life at The Grand for over five years, giving residents a chance to plant, water, and care for the community’s gardens. This routine is more than a hobby; it brings pride and connection to the gardeners and to neighbors who enjoy the flowers.
