Arabella of Longview | Residents Compete in Cornhole
Sweet Mama and Grumpy bring home the win at Arabella of Longview’s monthly cornhole tournament — proving teamwork never gets old!

When it comes to cornhole, Sweet Mama and Grumpy are the dynamic duo to beat. Known off the court as Becky M. and Ed O., these spirited residents of Arabella of Longview claimed first place in the community’s monthly tournament, held as part of the Independent Living program.

The match was a crowd-pleaser, with Sweet Mama and Grumpy delivering a performance that felt more like a synchronized dance than a game of toss. Their chemistry, quick decision-making, and unspoken coordination kept the competition guessing and the audience cheering. Their unique nicknames aren’t special to other residents in the community — everyone who participates dons an alter-ego that brings out the best of their competitive side.

“I just get up there and focus and try to hit the hole,” Gene B., also known as Slim, told KLTV. “Oh, it’s fun — it gives us something to do and competitiveness is always good!”

As much as it’s popular to go for gold, as well as the prize candy bar — community is what keeps these competitive seniors coming back. “The people are the main thing,” Becky told CBS19. “The people — the residents, and not being alone.”

“We call it the never ending cruise ship here in Arabella,” Activities Director Paula Matthews also shared with the news outlet. “We never dock. We just play and have fun every day.”

Cornhole has certainly turned into more than a game; it’s a community tradition. The monthly tournament, held on the last Thursday of each month, gives residents a chance to show off their improving skills. Winners take home bragging rights and the coveted traveling trophies until the next showdown.

“The energy they bring is just contagious,” said Becky Edwards, Executive Director at Arabella of Longview. “Watching our residents stay active and connect through games like cornhole is what it’s all about.”
