Purple Heart Hero Still Calling His Shots at Arabella of Longview

Purple Heart Veteran Honored | Arabella of Longview
Tom K., Purple Heart veteran, shows off his skills at Arabella of Longview, inspiring residents with determination and daily pool games.

Tom K. doesn’t just play pool; he wins. With one leg, one eye, and no excuses, the U.S. Army veteran shows up daily at Arabella of Longview, cue in hand and ready to play.

On National Purple Heart Day, the senior living community returned the gesture. This time, it wasn’t about his favorite game of pool, but rather, recognition and appreciation. As the only resident in the community with a Purple Heart, Arabella of Longview honored the 93-year-old with a ceremony, music, and refreshments.

Decades ago, during his service in the Army, Tom experienced life-changing injuries, losing his leg and part of his vision. He returned home carrying those sacrifices with him. Today, he continues to live with determination, playing pool daily and serving as an active member of Arabella of Longview’s veterans group.

“I want to thank the people for the surprise and thank Lord, I’m still here,” Tom shared with local journalists.

“For not having a leg, he’s very active,” fellow Army veteran Fred W. told CBS 19. “His favorite activity here is shooting pool and he’s very good at it, so you don’t want to bet against him.”

The memorable day, along with Tom’s story, was also featured in the Longview-News Journal.

“Tom shows us what perseverance looks like,” said Rae Quezada, Executive Director of Arabella of Longview. “We wanted to take a day to come together to recognize not just his military service, but his daily commitment to living fully.”
