Houston Seniors Debate in Monthly Book Club

Sylvia Plath Sparked the Latest Discussion at StoneCreek

Houston Seniors Meet for Book Club | StoneCreek of Copperfield
Residents participate in the monthly book club at StoneCreek of Copperfield in Houston, TX, discussing their latest read.

Reading once again drew senior residents together at StoneCreek of Copperfield as the group moved into their latest pick: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. Participants Sitha B., Paula N., Claudette W., and Micha L. continued their twice-monthly book club, which began earlier this year, offering a chance to share thoughts and connect during a season when many adults in Houston, TX, experience increased isolation.

Activity Director Shelby Lott leads the meetings, keeping residents engaged and steering discussions through whatever territory the author or the latest mystery novel takes them. Each meeting supports shared reading, discussion, and routine that residents look forward to twice each month.

During the second session of each month, the group wraps up the previous title and talks through genres they want to read next. Shelby then selects a book based on those preferences, with mystery stories and novels with international settings remaining longtime favorites among members.

Between Meetings, the Book Talk Continues

Between meetings, one staff member joins the club after finishing their shift, walking around the community to talk with residents about whatever chapter they’re on. The conversations keep going even after the official meeting ends, giving residents another person to discuss plot twists and character development with throughout the month.

Many Members Are New to Group Reading

Many participants are new to group reading. During the most recent session, residents shared how grateful they were to spend time with peers who enjoy books, noting that the club helps them avoid reading alone in their rooms.

“It’s been amazing to watch the group dive into a new book each month,” said Shelby Lott. “They share ideas, ask questions, and sometimes even challenge each other’s take on the story. We love seeing residents gather, discuss, and enjoy reading together. Each meeting really brings people together.”

The next book has already been selected: The Silent Patient by Alexis Michaelides. The psychological thriller promises to give the group plenty to debate at their next gathering.
