At 92 and 75, Harvest of Roanoke Couple Shows That It’s Never Too Late for Love

Harvest of Roanoke | It’s Never Too Late for Love
Richard and Johanna share a joyful moment at Harvest of Roanoke, showing that love after retirement is real, vibrant, and beautifully unexpected.

It was a typical Sunday service at Harvest of Roanoke, but for Richard M., 92, something felt off. Raised as a Catholic, the format was unfamiliar to him, and his confusion was probably written all over his face. As he tried to follow along, his eyes wandered — and that’s when he saw her.

Johanna G., 75, seated to his left, noticed him and offered a smile. Richard later said it was the most beautiful smile he had ever seen. That simple exchange was the beginning of something neither of them expected.

Originally from Zumbrota, Minnesota, Richard served in the Air Force before attending the University of Arizona. He spent his career as a sales engineer with Westinghouse. Johanna was born and raised in Columbus, Texas. She attended Texas State University and was a member of the Strutters before eventually becoming the team’s director.

Both had lived fulfilled lives. Both had experienced loss. Neither was looking for a new relationship. But over the following weeks, Richard and Johanna began to spend more time together — first at services, then in the courtyard, walking and talking. Soon, they were working on puzzles side by side and sitting together at every community event.

“I didn’t realize what was missing in my life until I met Richard,” Johanna said. For Richard, who had been mourning the death of his wife, Johanna brought comfort and renewed hope. “She helped ease that pain. I never thought I’d fall in love again,” he said.

Their connection didn’t go unnoticed. Every time there’s music, they’re among the first on the floor. They’ve also grown close to each other’s families and often spend time together at their children’s homes.

Their kids have embraced the relationship wholeheartedly. “It’s good to see them happy,” their children said. “They bring out the best in each other.”

“Richard and Johanna remind us that some of the best parts of life don’t come on a schedule,” said Erika Gee, Executive Director of Harvest of Roanoke. “They showed up for church and ended up finding each other. Now, they’re dancing at every event, finishing each other’s puzzles, and bringing a quiet kind of joy to everyone around them. It’s been a pleasure to watch their story unfold.”
