30,000 Cookies and Counting: Senior’s Recipe Carries On at Arabella of Athens

Arabella of Athens | Resident Bakes in Memory Care
Ellen baking her famous cookies at Arabella of Athens — a sweet moment that shows how memory care can support lifelong passions.

For years, Ellen E. was known around Malakoff for one simple thing: her chocolate chip cookies. People from her church, First Baptist Malakoff, and across her neighborhood came to expect them at nearly every gathering. By her own count — and that of those who know her best — she’s baked more than 30,000!

Once, she baked 2,000 cookies for a Women’s Retreat alone. Now in memory care, Ellen recently moved into Arabella of Athens — where her sweet legacy continues.

She is still spending time in the kitchen, doing what she’s done most of her life. With help from fellow residents and support from her husband, Ellen baked and served some delicious treats to her new neighbors and team members.

While Ellen is happier than ever to continue to bake with her favorite ingredient — love — the senior living community has plans to help her give back to a greater cause. This summer, Arabella of Athens is planning to host a fundraiser for the local Alzheimer’s Coalition. The cookies Ellen provides for the bake sale will be a small part in how all the residents will make a big difference.

“Ellen’s story is a beautiful reminder that dementia doesn’t have to mean the end of doing what you love,” said Pam Holcomb, Executive Director at Arabella of Athens. “Our team is committed to helping residents like Ellen continue their passions — whether that’s baking cookies or giving back to the community. We believe in creating opportunities for meaningful moments and purpose at every stage of life.”
