At the age of 87, JJ remembers fondly running on the soccer pitch in his younger years. Now a resident at Double Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care in Round Rock, Texas, he had the opportunity to be immersed in the world’s most popular sport once again.
JJ recently attended a game at Q2 Stadium, where Austin FC scored twice on the New York Red Bulls, taking home the victory. But the real man of the match was the retired soccer player and veteran who watched from the sidelines.
JJ’s lifelong dream was to attend a professional soccer match in Spain. Sadly, that never came to fruition. But when our team asked him what he’d like to do as part of the Miracle Moment program, his answer was simple: go to a match closer to home.
“This was an easy yes,” said Mimi Nguyen, Activities Director at Double Creek. “JJ has a history with the game, and we’re glad to have helped make this happen. This put him right back in it — just with a better seat and no sprints.”
In addition to attending the match, JJ received an official Austin FC jersey, and posed for photos with the team’s official Luchador mascot! His family also attended, which was particularly meaningful, as it was Father’s Day Weekend.
“Life doesn’t stop after retirement — it just shifts gears,” Executive Director Jeremy Partlow said. “At Double Creek, we’re here to help our residents keep doing what they love in new and meaningful ways.”
