Things to See and Do in Austin, Texas, That Seniors Will Love

Table of Contents

Austin is one of the most eclectic cities in Texas. It’s an artistic community known for live music, youthful culture, and Tex-Mex food, but there’s more to Austin than that. Older adults and their families find plenty of rewarding senior activities here as well, including ones for family members with cognitive challenges like dementia.

Tech Ridge Oaks has an enviable location in North Austin, close to Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park and an appreciable distance from the busier downtown areas. And we’re just nine miles from Round Rock, another fun Texas town.

North Austin and nearby Round Rock offer treasures waiting to be discovered. Our residents and caregiving team members enjoy exploring both, and have happily shared their favorite landmarks. So, instead of Googling “things for seniors to do near me,” read our guide and start planning some day trips.

Outdoor Activities in Austin, Texas

Austin’s outdoor attractions are enjoyable for seniors, as long as the weather’s not too hot or humid. Bring extra water and a few snacks; there are plenty of benches to rest on.

  • Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail and Boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake: There are 10 miles of trails bordering Lady Bird Lake and a memorial at Auditorium Shores honoring the late and great bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan. Visitors come here to hike, bike, and fish.
  • Zilker Botanical Garden: Zilker Park is home to Zilker Botanical Garden, a peaceful escape with themed gardens, Koi-filled ponds, and streams. Here, seniors can spend time observing the carefully cultivated flowers and tranquil water features.
  • Barton Springs Pool: Also located within Zilker Park, this popular swim area is three acres and has changing areas and bathrooms. The water averages 68 to 70 degrees, and is fed from underground springs. Fun fact: Robert Redford learned to swim here when he was five years old. We suggest stopping here during the week; Saturdays and Sundays get crowded.
  • Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum: This natural setting features works by 20th century American sculptor Charles Umlauf and other contemporary sculptors in a lovely garden setting.

When the weather’s too hot, cold, or otherwise not conducive to staying outdoors for too long, seniors and their families can spend their leisure time pursuing fun indoor Austin activities.

Indoor Activities in Austin, Texas

These indoor pursuits appeal to all ages, and like Austin’s outdoor offerings, some are also dementia-friendly:

  • Blanton Museum of Art: With exhibitions ranging from contemporary pieces to timeless classics, there’s something for everyone to explore together. Museum staff members are accommodating, and benches throughout the museum allow for easy breaks.
  • Austin Central Library: A beautiful public space, this library has a local art gallery, and a cafe for lunch, coffee, and pastries.
  • Moviehouses: Three of Austin’s best-loved movie theaters are the Alamo Drafthouse, Violet Crown, and the Paramount Theatre. Check their websites; sometimes they show classics.
  • Amazing Restaurants: A trip to Austin isn’t complete without sampling their cuisine. Our seniors enjoy meals at Mandola’s, Jack Allen’s Kitchen, and Kerbey Lane Cafe.
  • The Dougherty Arts Center: Encompassing the Dougherty Arts Center Theater, the Julia C. Butridge Gallery and the Dougherty Arts School, this award-winning cultural arts center hosts visual, performing and digital arts experiences for broad audiences, plus senior art programs.

Now that we’ve covered fun things to see and do in Austin, Texas, let’s head north to Round Rock.

Round Rock Activities for Seniors

When searching “what to do in Round Rock,” you’ll come across these gems:

  • Round Rock Express Baseball Games: Catching a game at Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express minor league baseball team, is a must-do activity. The stadium also hosts special events like Veterans Day celebrations and fall festivals.
  • Round Rock Market Days: Every first Saturday of the month, Downtown Round Rock transforms into a bustling market filled with local vendors selling art, crafts, and delicious food.
  • Amazing Restaurants: Some of our best picks include Blue Corn Harvest Bar and Grill, Backporch Social, and Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen.
  • Old Settlers Park: With peaceful walking trails surrounded by lush greenery and water views, this park is the perfect setting for a relaxing stroll. There are plenty of benches along the paths, for rest breaks and opportunities to enjoy the calming beauty of nature.

The abundance of Austin and Round Rock activities offer endless opportunities for seniors and their loved ones to embark on fun adventures. And when nighttime approaches, Tech Ridge Oak residents have a loving sanctuary to return home to.
