Some Sunday habits stick — but Tech Ridge Oaks resident Billie G.’s lasted more than 80 years!
Billie started attending Koenig Lane Christian Church at the age of 10. Her family played a role in helping run it, so she continued to attend. Eight decades later, and that church remained a part of her weekly routine ever since.

As the saying goes, ‘All good things must come to an end’. With fewer than 20 members and rising costs, the church was forced to close. The building was sold, with proceeds being donated to a nonprofit selected by the remaining congregation.
Billie mentioned to Tech Ridge Oaks Community Relations Director Alex Degrenia that she was hoping to attend the final service. Without hesitation, he stepped in to help.
“The church has been part of her life for so long — it’s more than just a building,” Alex said. “When she told me it was closing, I knew we had to find a way for her to go. She needed to say goodbye in person.”
It turned out to be a very special Miracle Moment for Billie. On that Sunday, the pews were as familiar as ever as she soaked in the final service one last time.
“Billie’s been going to that church longer than most people have been alive,” said Dolores Hernandez-Bocanegra, Executive Director of Tech Ridge Oaks. “Helping her get back there wasn’t about making a statement. It was just something that mattered to her, and that made it matter to us.”
