Flagstaff Geologist with Dementia Finds Connection Through His Written Work

Table of Contents

Even with memory loss, Stanley B. hasn’t lost touch with the world he once studied so closely: the layered rock walls of the Grand Canyon.

Now living in The Cottage, the memory care neighborhood in The Bluffs of Flagstaff, Stanley may not be hiking the canyon anymore, but he’s still connected to it through the book he authored, Grand Canyon Geology.

“He was considered one of the living experts on the Grand Canyon,” Rebecca C., Stanley’s daughter, told AZ Family News. He worked as a professor at Northern Arizona University. “My mom always said that was his first love. She was his second.”

Geologist’s Legacy Lives | The Bluffs of Flagstaff
The Bluffs of Flagstaff’s memory care in Flagstaff, AZ, supports meaningful connections, honoring each resident’s legacy with dignity and compassion.

Stanley’s book was co-published with the Museum of Northern Arizona Press, bringing together the latest research on the canyon’s formation and history. It covers everything, from rock layers and fossils to the twists and turns of the Colorado River with insights from a team of geology experts.

At 95, Stanley’s routine looks different, but flipping through his own work sparks moments of recognition and connection. His story shows how a lifetime of knowledge can stick around, even when memory gets tricky.

“He would sit at the table and he would tell us his stories about the Grand Canyon,” Kendra Wilson, The Bluff’s Memory Care Activity Director, told the outlet. Just two years ago, she organized a book signing and took him to visit the canyon for his 93rd birthday.

Though Stanley struggles daily with his cognitive decline, his spirit is still strong. When asked if he feels well, he responds, “Yeah, I feel well. I think I’m going to live to be 100!”

“Stanley’s book isn’t just a collection of facts. It’s more of a link to his identity,” said Andy Auteri, Executive Director of The Bluffs of Flagstaff. “It’s a reminder that what we create can hold meaning long after the page turns.”
