At 94, every Easter and Christmas, residents of The Ridglea Assisted Living and Memory Care gather in quiet anticipation as Dr. Charles H. delivers messages rooted in decades of wisdom, scholarship, and spiritual leadership.
A renowned theologian, published author, and former pastor of some of Texas’ most respected congregations, he’s not just a resident. He’s a living legacy.
In 2021, he moved to the senior living community to remain close to his late wife, Jeanette, after she required memory care. Thanks to The Ridglea’s care, Dr. Charles lived in assisted living while Jeanette received quality support for dementia just down the hall. The two were married 68 years when she passed away — and his devotion to both her and his calling never wavered.
Since then, Dr. Charles has continued writing. He published his seventh book during his time in assisted living, and routinely leads Bible studies and worship services for fellow residents.
A Doctor of Theology with degrees from Columbia Theological Seminary, Mercer University, and Oxford University, Dr. Charles has served congregations and seminaries in Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Washington, D.C., and most notably, in Fort Worth. He led at Polytechnic United Methodist Church and helped merge it with Texas Wesleyan University, a visionary process that took three years of research and action.
His written works include: Christianity for Tomorrow, Think on These Things, and Who is Like You, O Lord?
One of his favorite things in life now is being a grandparent. “When I think about it carefully, it’s the idea that family legacy can continue,” he said. “It does not stop with the death of one, but continues on with generations to come, leaving something in the world better than you found it.”
