What better way to celebrate Independence Day than offering an extra meaningful morning for two of Arabella of Athens’ newest residents?
Every 4th of July, the Thunder Over East Texas Air Show is the talk of Athens, Texas. Which is why Memory Care Coordinator Lisa Pelligra thought it was the perfect opportunity to show some love towards residents Reuel and Frances C.

The couple, who were both lifelong pilots and owned their own airport, clearly have a strong love of flying. Reuel and Frances moved into The Cottage memory care at Arabella of Athens in April. The transition was particularly tough for Reuel, an accomplished veteran.
Recognizing this, Pelligra arranged a pre-show visit with the event’s pilots. Reuel, who served in the Korean War, was invited to become one of the first Green Berets but chose a different path. He still loves to reconnect with his passion for flying, which is exactly how his new community welcomed him back into the cockpit of conversation.
“Airplanes have always been part of their story. This visit helped bring a piece of that back,” Pelligra shared.
The Thunder Over East Texas Air Show featured the USAF F-16 “Viper” Demonstration Team, Randy Ball’s MiG-17, the Titan Aerobatic Team, and other acts. The event supports veteran organizations throughout East Texas.
“Getting Reuel and Frances this intimate opportunity to walk alongside these airplanes and speak with the talented, passionate pilots is more than just nostalgia,” Pelligra added. “It’s about creating moments of joy and excitement as they begin a new chapter of their retirement.”
