Every year on the summer solstice, the Alzheimer’s Association marks The Longest Day, a national fundraiser that rallies individuals and organizations to raise money for care, support, and research. Communities across the country participate with activities that bring people together around a shared purpose: to end Alzheimer’s.
This year, Arabella of Athens joined the effort in a way that felt true to the heart of East Texas. Their first-ever “Fishing for a Cure” fundraiser turned their own private dock and lake into a gathering place for residents, families, and community members — all coming together for a day of fishing, food, and fundraising.
From sunrise to sunset, fishermen rotated through the lakeside piers, while Arabella’s chef kept the energy up with breakfast, lunch, and dinner served dockside. All proceeds from meals, donations, and other event activities directly benefited the Alzheimer’s Coalition of Henderson County, ensuring support stayed local.
But the event was more than just casting lines. Residents at The Cottage, Arabella’s memory care program, added a personal touch. They contributed to a bake sale featuring items made during their weekly “bread-making” activity, including longtime resident Ellen E.’s famous family-recipe cookies. Members of the Green Thumb Club also pitched in, donating jars of homemade salsa using vegetables they grew themselves.
Media outlets across the greater Tyler area came to cover the event, capturing the emotion, energy, and purpose behind the day.

“It means a fun day for one thing!” Barbara M. told KLTV. “Everyone gets to fish — if they want to keep their fish, they can keep it.”
“And it’s for a good cause,” her husband Dale chipped in.
There were also somber moments, especially for Jeb D., who participated in honor of his late parents, who both had dementia.
“It’s a bad thing. I feel like I’ve been robbed,” he explained to the news outlet. “There’s a lot of people I know whose folks are getting it, and we need help.”
The event was organized by Community Relations Director Bre Holcomb, who’s worked at Arabella since high school and continues to serve her hometown with passion.
“We were blown away by the turnout and generosity of our community,” she said. “Fishing for a Cure brought people of all ages together, and every dollar raised will help families facing Alzheimer’s right here in Henderson County.”
“From our residents’ homemade goods to the anglers who spent all day on the docks, it was incredible to see so many come together with purpose and heart,” she added. “This is what a community looks like!”
