Legacy Oaks of Azle Celebrated Resident’s 100th Birthday
Marguerite celebrated her 100th birthday at Legacy Oaks of Azle, surrounded by neighbors and reflecting on a life of teaching and travel.

We were honored to celebrate a truly special milestone in December 2025 as Marguerite H., a beloved member of our Legacy Oaks of Azle family, turned 100 on December 13. Marguerite’s lifelong passion for teaching, travel, and gardening is an inspiration to all of us, and her century of experiences reminds us of the joy that comes from curiosity, learning, and meaningful connections.

Marguerite was born in Ackerman, Mississippi, and moved to Grenada when she was just four years old. In December 1943, she met Kinsey Stewart at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, and the two began a lifelong partnership. Together, they raised three daughters (Kathy, Karen, and Maureen) while making memories throughout the country in places like New Orleans, Malibu, and Long Beach, Mississippi.

Marguerite dedicated her career to nurturing young minds, teaching kindergarten in New Orleans and first grade in Malibu before spending nearly twenty years in Long Beach classrooms. She inspired countless students, including Frank Capra III, the grandson of the filmmaker behind It’s a Wonderful Life. Marguerite’s love for teaching continues to shine through in the stories and wise words that she shares with her neighbors here at Legacy Oaks.

A Life Shaped by Curiosity and Adventure

Beyond the classroom, Marguerite embraced a life of exploration. She’s traveled to all 50 U.S. states and throughout Europe, visiting Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and the Netherlands. These adventures remain a favorite topic of conversation and reflect her lifelong desire to experience the world fully.

Here at Legacy Oaks of Azle, Marguerite enjoys spending her days reading, working on crossword puzzles, and caring for her garden of flowers and vegetables. She also loves sharing her favorite meals, like New Orleans gumbo, New England clam chowder, trout almondine, and crème brûlée, which remind her of her travels and her love for simple pleasures.

Marguerite chose our Azle community for its proximity to her daughter and son-in-law, its thoughtful building design, and the staff’s attentiveness. She especially enjoys her first-floor apartment with a porch and yard, as well as convenient access to Fort Worth museums and local attractions.

“Marguerite has lived a long and active life,” said Nichol Wesson, Executive Director of Legacy Oaks of Azle. “She shares her experiences with neighbors, whether through teaching, traveling, or gardening, and that adds interest to everyday life in the community.”

When asked for advice, Marguerite’s words remained simple and timeless: “Live each day to its fullest.”
