The stage was set, the lines were memorized, and the tennis rackets were good to go! The newly formed Ancient Actors Drama Club at Legacy Oaks of Midlothian recently debuted its first production, Battle of the Sexes, and the community couldn’t be more thrilled.
Inspired by the legendary 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs at the Houston Astrodome, the comedy adds a playful twist. Residents wove in quirky commercials, bold fortune tellers, and lively characters whose playful wagers kept the audience guessing. The cast featured memorable roles, such as Mavis and Charlie, whose humorous debate frames the story, Glo, the resourceful housekeeper, and even a toothpaste salesman named Pearly White. Between the jokes and dramatic serves, the big question remained: could Riggs keep his confidence, or would King prove him wrong all over again?

“This performance was about more than just a play,” said Justin Anderson, Executive Director of Legacy Oaks of Midlothian. “It showcased the talents, humor, and creativity of our residents, bringing history to life on stage while inspiring everyone who witnessed it. The energy, camaraderie, and pride on display were incredible.”
Written initially by Genevieve Jencsen, the script expanded with new characters and scenes conceived by the cast themselves, transforming history into a lively and imaginative experience.
Legacy Oaks was filled with excitement and applause as residents took to the stage to perform for a standing-room-only crowd. Families, friends, and visitors enjoyed mingling with the cast afterward, receiving playbills, and celebrating a truly memorable afternoon.
The success of this production has sparked growing interest among residents, and organizers are already planning for the next Drama Club performance, expecting many more participants. The Ancient Actors Drama Club continues to showcase the creativity, talent, and spirit of the Legacy Oaks community, proving that it’s never too late to take center stage.
