What started as a few extra sets of hands has grown into a full-blown Builder’s Club at Legacy Oaks of Midlothian. One of their most heartwarming projects to date: a tiny playhouse for a very tiny new homeowner.
Clarice Bishop, Independent Living Activities Director, knew the playhouse she bought for her 2-year-old granddaughter, Jolie C., came in more pieces than she could manage on her own. So, she turned to the Builder’s Club, a resident-led team of problem-solvers known throughout the community for their craftsmanship and can-do attitude.

“They had already helped us build lockers for our staff breakroom and furniture for one of our memory care model rooms,” said Bishop. “But this time, I asked for a favor just for me, and they made it better than I could have imagined.”
Three residents — Beauford H., Kendall K., and Jim W. — took on the colorful construction project over three days, working between other community activities in the shared activity room. Their teamwork, patience, and laughter filled the space as they turned a box of bolts and boards into a cheerful little home fit for a toddler.
What came next wasn’t part of the instructions, but it left a lasting impression. One of their wives suggested leaving a note in the mailbox attached to the playhouse. The trio signed a card that read: “We enjoyed building your first house. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.”
Jolie may not fully understand the craftsmanship that went into her new playhouse, but there’s no doubt she’ll feel the care that built it.
The Builder’s Club at Legacy Oaks now has a reputation around the community, not just for building shelves and furniture, but for building relationships and purpose. Residents have begun requesting custom projects of their own — from toy assembly for great-grandkids to small furniture needs — each one completed with steady hands and generous spirit.
“It’s a way for them to stay active, feel needed, and share their skills in a way that genuinely helps others,” said Bishop. “They’re not just building things. They’re building joy.”
