From First-Place Winner to First-Rate Judge: Midlothian Resident Reconnects with Her Speech, Debate Roots

“I was interested in expression speech from a young age,” Legacy Oaks of Midlothian resident Corine E. said. “I practiced with my first-grade teacher, Miss Critchett, and went on to compete with many schools.”

“I won first place in one competition and later earned second place in another,” she added.

Corine’s love for the craft would come full circle during her My Miracle Moment the community organized. She and several other residents were official judges in the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA) Speech and Debate competition.

Residents from Legacy Oaks of Midlothian served as judges during a NCFCA speech and debate competition.

The former speech contest competitor evaluated students’ performances and shared her insights and feedback at the event.

“Being a judge for NCFCA allowed me to relive those memories,” Corine shared. “I enjoyed listening to the speeches and watching the kids’ expressions and movements.”

This partnership between Legacy Oaks of Midlothian and the NCFCA will continue, with students planning to visit the community regularly to practice their speeches.

“It’s not every day you get to practice your debate skills with someone who’s been there, done that, and won the trophy,” said Jeff Treml, Executive Director. “Corine’s experience and enthusiasm have been a gift to these students, and we’re excited to see this connection grow.”
