Once a teacher, always a teacher! Retired educators and librarians, who now call Legacy Oaks of Midlothian home, returned to the classroom for DEAR Day (Drop Everything and Read). The residents spent time with the first and second-graders of J.R. Irvin Elementary School. After the reading session, they handed out bookmarks they had personally crafted, sharing a piece of their creativity with the students.
It’s these types of individuals, who have poured decades of service into the community, that are meant to be recognized during National Teacher Appreciation Week. This initiative celebrates the invaluable contributions and unwavering commitment of lifelong educators.
And while it’s great to set aside time to honor those who pour into the community’s next generation, their work continues all year round.
At the beginning of the year, several residents attended a local high school’s production of “Singin’ in the Rain”! Their show of support meant the world to those performing. A few weeks later, children from FireHouse Kids Daycare visited Legacy Oaks of Midlothian to enjoy a special storytime by a retired librarian resident. A hand puppet brought the book to life!
“Having retired educators as part of our community is a true honor,” said Justin Anderson, Executive Director of Legacy Oaks of Midlothian. “Their passion for learning and commitment to service didn’t end with retirement — it continues to inspire everyone around them. Watching them return to the classroom and connect with young students reminds us of the lifelong impact teachers have.”
