On an ordinary Tuesday afternoon at Legacy Oaks of Midlothian, many residents — sometimes even staff — are locked into intense chess matches. Seniors who haven’t touched a chessboard in decades have suddenly found themselves drawn to the idea of learning something new together.

After a family member contacted Clarice Bishop to ask if their loved one could play chess in the community, the Independent Living Activity Director learned interest in the royal game was much wider than she anticipated. Most residents shared they hadn’t played in a very long time, but would be willing to learn if there was someone to guide them.
In response, Clarice gathered teaching chess sets with clearly labeled pieces, found a beginner-friendly book, and printed instruction sheets for participants. The first session was organized soon after, and has been meeting every Tuesday since.
Attendance ranges from 10 to 14 seniors each week. Some have since purchased their own boards and books to practice between sessions. The group continues to grow, and a casual interest has turned into a regular part of the activity calendar.
Their gusto for the game has spread outside their home’s walls, even making it into the local newspaper, the Midlothian Mirror!
“It’s become a highlight of our week,” said Justin Anderson, Executive Director of Legacy Oaks of Midlothian. “What began as one simple idea has turned into a fun way for residents to connect, learn, and enjoy each other’s company.”
“Chess has brought everyone together in a way we didn’t expect,” he added. “And it’s amazing to see how it’s grown into something we all look forward to every Tuesday.”
