The Brooks at Cibolo Home to Couple Who Previously Owned the Land

Table of Contents

Senior living community, The Brooks of Cibolo, is home to Don and Carol B. who just happen to be the previous owners of the property where the community now sits.

After closing their plant nursery business and putting their acres of land up for sale, the Buells decided to stay close to home and move into the senior living community.

Their Love Story

Back in the ’50s in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, the YMCA would host a Sunday dance for the community. They would play big band records such as Glenn Miller, Buddy Marrow, and Arty Shaw on the fourth floor of the building with a small dance floor. It was a great way for young adults to meet.

“It was there that I met my now life partner, Carol,” says Don, remembering their love story fondly. “We both liked to swing dance and we had the best time! After many dances, I got the courage to ask her if I could drive her home that evening. At that time, I had a Buick convertible with power windows, a rare commodity in those days.”

As they drove home that evening, Don lowered the passenger window, startling Carol. She flew across the seat and into his arms, where Don says she’s been for the last 64 years. “I am so glad I got the courage to drive her home that evening!” He added.

Moving to Cibolo

In 1983, Don, Carol, and their two sons moved from St. Paul to Cibolo, which Don had been charmed by for a while. They vacationed in Cibolo for years before they decided to relocate their life and business to the town. The couple’s Wholesale Growers was a plant nursery that became a fond fixture of Cibolo with its poinsettias during Christmas.

The Brooks of Cibolo also recently won Best Senior Living Dining under Housing and Home Care in the San Antonio Senior Resource Guide’s Best of 2021 awards.
