Cibolo Resident Adopts New Dog After Loss

Table of Contents

After losing her beloved dog, Doreen V., a resident at The Brooks of Cibolo, faced a decision that wasn’t easy. For many pet owners, the bond doesn’t simply reset — and choosing to adopt again takes time.

After giving it careful thought, Doreen decided she was ready to welcome a new companion into her life.

Her Community Steps In to Help

On March 23, 2026, team members at The Brooks of Cibolo helped turn that decision into action. As part of the My Miracle Moment program, team members accompanied Doreen to the Schertz animal shelter, where she could meet dogs and find the right fit.

The day included more than just the visit. The community covered her adoption fees, treated her to lunch, and organized a donation effort in memory of her previous dog, giving back to the shelter in a meaningful way.

“Doreen’s beloved dog passed away, and after thinking about it, she decided she’d like to adopt a new friend,” said Gabriela Reyna, Independent Living Activities Director at The Brooks of Cibolo. “The community raised donations in her dog’s memory to give to the Schertz animal shelter, and we paid the pet adoption fees. We were excited to do this for Doreen.”

More Than an Adoption

The visit gave Doreen time to connect with the dogs, take her time, and choose a companion that felt right.

Moments like these reflect something bigger than a single event. They show how support can look different for every resident. Sometimes it’s about making a big decision feel easier, and sometimes it’s about honoring what came before while stepping into something new.
