Long before dating apps and swipes, there was Joe B. with a flashlight and a plan.
He was an usher at a Texas movie theater. She was sitting in the audience, talking to a friend. Joe used his flashlight to shine directly on Yvonne’s face, not to scold but to strike up a conversation. That bold move worked. They started dating, and not long after, they were saying, “I do.” The date was May 30, 1953, just one day after Yvonne graduated high school.

72 years, two daughters, and a few careers later, Joe, now 91, and Yvonne, 89, are still together and still making each other laugh. The Brooks of Cibolo, their senior living community, surprised them with a happy hour to celebrate the anniversary. There was a cake with their wedding photo on it, plenty of toasts, and more than a few stories shared.
Both Texas natives, Joe served in the U.S. Navy, worked for UPS, and eventually became a college professor. Yvonne was a homemaker who focused on raising their two daughters, now 70 and 59.
What’s the secret to 72 years? According to Joe and Yvonne, blessings, patience, and a good sense of humor.
To cap off the special celebration of a marriage surpassing seven decades — their surprise party was shown all across the San Antonio community after being featured on KENS5 News.
“There’s a lot you can learn from a couple like Joe and Yvonne,” said Jim Duggins, Executive Director at The Brooks of Cibolo. “We’re glad we could help them celebrate and steal a few relationship tips from them.”
