From Walker to Walking Proud: The Brooks of Cibolo Senior Embrances New Independence

Table of Contents

When Barbara W. moved into The Brooks of Cibolo, she brought more than a suitcase — she carried a quiet determination to get her life back.

At 82, Barbara had faced a life-altering fall and a sudden loss, events that would leave anyone feeling unsteady in more ways than one. But inside this small, close-knit senior living community, she found her footing again.

“I had to use a walker after the fall,” Barbara shared. “But I’ve always believed in keeping my body strong. What I learned in rehab, I kept doing. And the support here made it easier to keep going.”

Barbara credits her nursing background for giving her the instincts to rebuild her strength. She leaned on the guidance from her rehab team before moving in — and then leaned into the community she found at The Brooks. The dining team made it simple to stay nourished and hydrated, and her neighbor, Mickey, kept her spirits high with daily encouragement.

The Brooks of Cibolo | A Remarkable Recovery
Barbara beams with confidence at The Brooks of Cibolo, showing how independent living can lead to strength, purpose, and new beginnings.

“She’d tell me, ‘You’ve got this,’ and sometimes that was all I needed to hear,” Barbara added.

Though naturally reserved, Barbara was gently nudged into the social side of things, thanks to Gabriela Reyna, the Independent Living Activity Director. With regular card games, friendly chats, and outings to look forward to, Barbara says the shift in mindset was just as powerful as the physical recovery.

“The residents and team appreciate my progress, and have encouraged me and congratulated me along the way,” Barbara said. “I don’t want for anything here, because everyone is so generous and kind.”

Now, Barbara is walking confidently — without the walker — and showing others what resilience really looks like.

“At The Brooks of Cibolo, we believe every resident has the potential to regain confidence and live with renewed purpose,” said Jim Duggins, Executive Director. “Our team is here to support that journey — whether it starts with a walker or with a simple desire for something more.”
