Flagstaff Senior Community Celebrates Volunteers and Beloved Pets

At The Bluffs of Flagstaff, volunteers and community pets like Barney work together to create moments of joy and connection.

The efforts of two dedicated volunteers have made a significant impact in particular. Elena Morrison, a local college student, spends one-on-one time reading with residents, including Mr. Wally Hall, who treasures her weekly visits. Another volunteer, Nita Paden, shares her time by bringing her therapy dog to visit a resident who prefers quiet, one-on-one interactions.

“Volunteers like Elena and Nita demonstrate how even small, consistent acts of care can profoundly affect others,” Andy Auteri, Executive Director of The Bluffs of Flagstaff, shares. “Their time and compassion remind us all of the power of community.”

In addition to the incredible efforts of these volunteers, Barney, a friendly and lively pet, is a familiar face on the assisted living side of the community. Barney’s owner, Cornelia Heather, takes care to ensure that residents have treats on hand, making each visit from him a shared experience. Residents look forward to his visits that build bonds and brighten their days.

“The residents have such a deep connection with Barney,” said Andy. “He brings a sense of comfort and familiarity that is truly invaluable. It’s wonderful to see how much he means to everyone here.”
