Popular styles included bell bottom pants, frayed jeans, midi skirts, maxi dresses, Tie dye, peasant blouses, ponchos. chokers, headbands, scarves, and jewelry made of wood, stones, feathers, and beads.

Women’s fashions in the late 1970s included cowl-neck shirts and sweaters, pantsuits, leisure suits, sundresses worn with tight T-shirts, strapless tops, lower-cut shirts, cardigans, velour shirts, tunics, robes, crop tops, tube tops, embroidered vests and jeans, knee-length skirts, loose satin pants!

Aside from disco, funk, smooth jazz, jazz fusion, and soul remained popular throughout the decade. It is this influx of popular music that soon transformed into rock and roll during the Early 1970s.

The late 70s also witness the birth of another young music style: hip-hop. Some of the best rock n roll of all time was recorded in the 70s.

Disco Swing. One of the most iconic dance styles of the 1970s, Disco gets its name from the dance clubs in which it originated, which used records instead of live bands. The Bump is a form of popular dance introduced in the 1970s. Two partners, generally one male and one female, bump their hips against each other to the beat of the song.

Neo-expressionism, a style of modern painting, was very popular during the 1970’s. Neo-expressionism focused on portraying simple objects like the human body in an abstract manner. They were referred to as the “new wild ones”. Artist in that field were people like Chuck Connelly and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Crafting became very popular in the 70. From crocheting, painting rocks, to Shrink Dinks!

Our Art Throbs Club will be painting Neo-expressionism and sketching fashions of the decade.
